St. John’s Shoots the Lights Out to Coast Past Yale, 88-60

Red Storm record highest scoring total since Feb. 6, 2022
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's basketball team (3-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) coasted past Yale (0-3, 0-0 Ivy League) in an efficient offensive performance on Friday afternoon, 86-60, at Carnesecca Arena. St. John's scoring total marked the program's highest since it exploded to a 96-63 win over Xavier on Feb. 6, 2022.
The Johnnies shot 35-for-60 (58.3%) during the convincing victory in Queens, which marked the program's highest single-game shooting rate since it logged a 60.8 percent field goal mark in the WBIT First Round victory over Florida, 79-60, on March 21, 2024. The Red Storm posted an impressive mark of 71.1 percent (27-38) from two-point range and added 50 points in the paint. Four St. John's players shot 83.3 percent or better from the field.
Brooke Moore scored a career-high 16 points on 7-for-9 shooting to lead all scorers. Sa'Mya Wyatt logged an efficient outing finishing with 14 points on 7-for-8 (83.3%) shooting, including eight straight points during the second quarter. Beautiful Waheed tallied her second-straight double-digit scoring performance adding 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting and 3-for-4 from beyond-the-arc.
Shaulana Wagner delivered another efficient performance logging nine points on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting and eight assists, matching the most by a St. John's player since Skye Owen dished out eight helpers against Xavier on Jan. 31, 2024. The Red Storm dished out 22 assists on 35 made field goals/
Waheed opened the scoring on Friday afternoon with a 3-pointer from the corner off a feed from Lavelle. Moore finished a lay-in as the Red Storm raced out to a 7-0 lead. After the Bulldogs got on the board, Owen posted a 5-0 solo run capped off by a 3-pointer as the Johnnies early advantage grew to 15-4. The Red Storm cashed in on 6-of-7 field goal attempts to start the game. The Bulldogs responded with a 10-1 scoring run to bring the deficit within a single possession, 16-14, with 2:38 left in the first frame. The Johnnies caught fire once again rattling off a 10-0 run to end the frame to hold a 26-14 cushion after 10 minutes, highlighted by a step back triple her third of the stanza from Waheed. St. John's shot 75.0 percent (8-12) during the first quarter.
The dominant scoring run carried into the second stanza as the Johnnies run inflated to an 18-0 stretch to put the Red Storm in command the rest of the way. Yale was held scoreless for 6:27 of game time during St. John's separating scoring run that was closed out by a Moore triple . In the middle of the second frame, Wyatt took over scoring eight consecutive points for the Red Storm flushing four consecutive field goals. The Johnnies ended the half on a 3-pointer from Kyla Hayes as the freshman's first collegiate points fueled St. John's to double up Yale, 50-25, heading into the locker room.
In the third quarter, the Red Storm continued to extend the lead Daniela Abies got a lay-up to fall through contact for an old-fashioned three-point play. The Johnnies orchestrated their third consecutive 22-plus point scoring quarter to carry a 72-42 advantage into the final frame.
During the fourth quarter, Moore pushed the lead to its largest of the day, 74-42, with 9:34 remaining. Julie Bahati recorded her second bucket of the game midway through the frame as the junior added a season-high six points and four rebounds. Moree set a new personal best drilling the Johnnies' eighth 3-pointer of the night. The Red Storm held on for a dominant non-conference victory to open the homestand.
St. John's will be back in action on Wednesday night when it faces No. 20/20 Oklahoma State at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
