RV/No. 25 St. John’s Catches Fire from Deep to Down Georgetown on New Year’s Eve, 95-83

The St. John’s men’s basketball team matched a program BIG EAST record for made 3-pointers sinking 15 triples on Wednesday in Washington, D.C.
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The RV/No. 25 St. John's men's basketball team closed out 2025 tying a program BIG EAST record with 15 made 3-pointers in a road victory over Georgetown on New Year's Eve, 95-83.
The Red Storm (9-4, 2-0 BIG EAST) were red-hot from downtown, sinking a season-high 15 3-pointers, matching the program's BIG EAST record when it made the same number against DePaul on Feb. 6, 2024. The Johnnies shot 55.6 percent (15-27 3FG) from beyond-the-arc at Capital One Arena. Four Red Storm players made three or more triples in the lights out shooting performance in the nation's capital.
Zuby Ejiofor delivered a monster outing finishing out 2025 with 25 points, 10 rebounds, a career-high seven assists and two steals. The senior shot 7-for-9 (77.8 percent) from the field, 10-for-13 (76.9 percent) from the charity stripe and registered his second double-double of the season.
Oziyah Sellers found his stroke from long-range shooting 4-for-5 (80 percent) from 3-point land to finish the night with 16 points.
Ian Jackson reached double-digits in scoring for the fifth consecutive contest adding 14 points and shot 4-for-7 (57.1 percent) from deep. Joson Sanon added 13 points and Dylan Darling chipped in 11 points on 3-for-3 shooting from beyond-the-arc to round out the five double-figure scorers for the Johnnies.
Bryce Hopkins filled the box score with eight points, a season-high 10 boards and tied a career-best with six helpers. Georgetown's KJ Lewis led all scorers with 27 points on Wednesday.
St. John's victory over Georgetown (9-5, 1-2 BIG EAST) marked its 10th consecutive victory the Hoyas, tying the longest streak in the series' history, which dates back to 1909. The streak matches the 10 consecutive wins over its conference foe from Feb. 5, 1949 to Dec. 9, 1972.
The Johnnies came out firing from distance as Sellers and Jackson combined for three triples to take an early, 11-9 lead. The first six made field goals of the contest were all from beyond-the-arc. After back-to-back contested buckets in the paint from Ejiofor, the Red Storm made a steal on an in-bound pass that led to a fastbreak dunk by Sellers to take a 17-13 edge forcing a timeout with 14:59 left to play. The Hoyas rattled off a 9-0 scoring run to retake the lead, 22-17.
Later in the opening frame, the Hoyas stretched the advantage to as many as seven before the Red Storm regained its shooting stroke. Jackson and Sellers nailed 3-pointer before a baseline mid-range jumper closed out an 8-0 spurt as St. John's jumped back into the lead, 39-38, with 5:45 remaining in the first half.
The two sides continued to go back and forth as Georgetown retook the advantage for the sixth lead change of the game, 45-43, with 2:23 left. Darling answered for the Johnnies by knocking down one from long-range igniting a 9-0 run to give St. John's its largest lead of the opening 20 minutes, 52-45.
The Red Storm went into the locker room with a 52-47 advantage, marking the highest first half scoring total in a BIG EAST game since it scored 54 points in a win at DePaul on March 5, 2024. Ejiofor (17) and Sellers (13) combined for 30 points in the opening half on perfect 10-of-10 shooting from the floor and 4-of-4 from 3-point range.
In the second half, Sanon continued the hot shooting from deep flushing back-to-back 3-pointers. Ejiofor then reached the 20-point mark after converting an and one as the Johnnies lead sprung out by 12, 63-51, with 16:24 left on the clock.
Darling was the next Johnnie to catch fire knocking down a pair of treys in a 1:08 span as the St. John's lead rose to 15, 73-58, forcing a Hoyas timeout with 11:45 remaining. As the Red Storm maintained a double-digit cushion, Sellers rattled home a corner triple, his fourth of the evening to bring the advantage to 80-67. Jackson tied the program's BIG EAST record with the team's 15th triple of the evening as the Johnnies cushion expanded to 88-69 with 4:48 remaining.
In the closing minutes, the Hoyas ended the game on a 10-2 run but the Red Storm held on for a 12-point victory. St. John's shot 63.6% (7-11) from 3-point range over the final 20 minutes.
Wednesday's victory marked the program's first on New Year's Eve in 65 years, snapping a 10-game skid.
St. John's will return to The World's Most Famous Arena on Saturday for a 12 p.m. showdown against Providence on FOX.
