St. John’s men’s basketball and Apple Bank help partner to support City Harvest
QUEENS, N.Y. – For the fourth consecutive season, Apple Bank leveraged the on-court achievements of St. John's men's basketball to benefit a leading New York City non-profit organization, City Harvest. Through a season-long partnership with St. John's Sports Properties, Apple Bank donated $10 to City Harvest for every 3-point field goal made by the St. John's men's basketball team during the season. The Red Storm finished the regular season with 186 3-pointers. Once again, Apple Bank demonstrated their community commitment by generously rounding up their donation to $2,500. "We're so grateful that Apple Bank has built this long-standing platform of giving through St. John's Athletics. 3's for the Community is a program that improves our local communities and is well recognized by our fans. It's a win all around."
City Harvest is New York's first and largest food rescue organization, collecting high-quality, nutritious food that would otherwise go to waste to help provide free food for millions of New Yorkers experiencing food insecurity. Since their founding in 1982, City Harvest has rescued more than one billion pounds of fresh, nutritious food and delivered it—free of charge—to hundreds of food pantries, soup kitchens, community partners, and our own Mobile Markets® across the five boroughs. This year, City Harvest will rescue and distribute more than 81 million pounds of nutritious food to our neighbors in need. By redirecting that food to families, the organization will also prevent the equivalent of more than 24 million kilograms of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.
"City Harvest is thrilled to continue to partner with Apple Bank and St. John's Athletics through the 3's for the Community program," said Grace O'Grady, Business Partnerships Manager for City Harvest. "Right now, visits to food pantries and soup kitchens across New York City are at the highest level on record, and so many of our neighbors are struggling to make ends meet. Thanks to the generosity of Apple Bank and St. John's Athletics, City Harvest will be able to help feed more than 5,650 New Yorkers in need."
"Apple Bank understands the complex challenges inherent in addressing the issue of food insecurity," said Elaine Dovas, Senior Vice President, CRA Officer for Apple Bank. "Our efforts to respond to this pressing community need are strengthened and enhanced by working with City Harvest, a capable, committed, and efficient conduit for directing sustenance to those that are hungry."
