Three Johnnies finished in double-figures at Mohegan Sun Arena
UNCASVILLE, Conn. – The St. John's women's basketball team fell in the 2025 BIG EAST Quarterfinal to top-seeded No. 3/3 UConn, 71-40, on Saturday afternoon at Mohegan Sun Arena.
UConn orchestrated a lengthy opening quarter run and never looked back despite being held to 10.5 percent (2-19) shooting from beyond-the-arc. Three Red Storm players finished in double-figures
Ariana Vanderhoop tallied a double-digit performance adding 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting and 3-of-5 shooting from beyond-the-arc.
Kylie Lavelle tied for a team-high 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field and 3-of-6 shooting from 3-point range,
Lashae Dwyer recorded her 25th double-digit scoring outing of the season adding 10 points and five rebounds during Saturday's setback.
The Johnnies made seven 3-pointers and seven different players dished out 11 total assists in Uncasville, Conn.
The Red Storm tallied the first bucket of the game after Ber'Nyah Mayo finished the and one to open the scoring. The Johnnies held the Huskies without a field goal for the first 2:51 before UConn scored the next 18 to carry a 16-point advantage after the conclusion of the first quarter.
The Huskies continued to stretch their advantage before Vanderhoop broke up a 22-0 run and hated the scoring drought with a triple from the corner. The Red Storm began to find a groove offensively connecting on five of its next seven field goal attempts. Lavelle cashed in on a pair of 3-pointers leading Vanderhoop flushing a long-range two-point jumper to complete an 8-2 run and trim the deficit down to 13, 28-15, with 3:06 left in the half. Lashae Dwyer got the roll off a tough drive to the rack in the final 30 seconds. The Huskies held a 34-17 advantage heading into the locker room and were limited to 6.1 percent (1-11) shooting from 3-point range in the first 20 minutes.
In the third frame, Vanderhoop knocked down her second triple of the game off a one-handed no-look feed from Mayo. Dwyer capitalized from long-range nailing the Johnnies fifth triple of the game to make it 41-23. UConn ended the third period on a 12-4 spurt and brought a 53-27 cushion in the final quarter.
During the fourth with the Huskies in command, Lavelle and Vanderhoop nailed their third triples of the afternoon. Dwyer finished an old-fashioned three-point play to reach double-digits in scoring for the 25th this season.
St. John's has been eliminated from the tournament and the Huskies will move onto tomorrow's BIG EAST Tournament Semifinals at 2:30 p.m. on FOX.
