Joanne Persico to be Enshrined Into Order of Sons & Daughters of Italy in America Sports Hall of Fame

Longtime Red Storm volleyball head coach to be inducted on Friday in Orlando, Florida
WASHINGTON D.C. – St. John's Volleyball Head Coach Joanne Persico will be enshrined into the Order of Sons & Daughters of Italy in America (OSDIA) Sports Hall of Fame on Friday, August 15 at the organization's national convention in Florida.
Persico, the winningest active coach in BIG EAST Volleyball history will be inducted into her fourth Hall of Fame at a luncheon on Friday afternoon during the 59th Biennial National Convention hosted at the Grand Cypress Hyatt Regency in Orlando. The longtime and sole leader of the Red Storm volleyball program joins a decorated list of past winners including current St. John's Men's Basketball Head Coach Rick Pitino (2001) and the legendary Lou Carnesecca (1989).
She becomes the first-ever volleyball coach to be presented with the accolade and joins sporting icons 13-time World Series Champion Yogi Berra, U.S. Men's Ice Hockey Captain of the "Miracle on Ice" Mike Eruzione, 12-time NCAA Champion Geno Auriemma and many more as winners of the OSDIA Sports Award.
She becomes just the fourth woman to ever earn the honor, which was established in 1985 to recognize the best and brightest of Italian-Americans in sports, that in addition to their success display an unwavering commitment to helping out in the community.
Persico, heading into her 32nd season as the St. John's Volleyball Head Coach is fresh off her 14th 20-win season, which saw the Red Storm qualify for its 13th BIG EAST Tournament and its third-straight NIVC Tournament berth. The Red Storm advanced all the way to the NIVC Fab Four in 2024, which marks the program's best-ever finish in a national postseason tournament.
The three-time BIG EAST Coach of the Year is no stranger to recognition for her work on the volleyball court and in the community. In the past year, she has been honored twice by St. John's University with the 2024 St. John's Vincentian Mission Award and the Dr. Pamela Shea-Byrnes Award at the St. John's Bread and Life Johnny's Angels dinner this past spring. Throughout her coaching career, she has been inducted into Syracuse's Orange Plus Hall of Fame, the Catholic High School Athletics Hall of Fame, the St. Francis Prep High School Hall of Fame and the St. Francis Prep Ring of Honor.
