Gomes tabbed BIG EAST Freshman and Offensive Player of the Week; McLachlan tabbed goalkeeper of the week
NEW YORK – St. John's men's soccer players Guilherme Gomes and Alec McLachlan captured BIG EAST Weekly Awards, the conference office announced on Tuesday. Gomes was tabbed freshman and offensive player of the week and McLachlan was named goalkeeper of the week.
In Thursday's 5-0 victory over New Hampshire, Gomes became the first St. John's player since Fred Bischoff on Oct. 23, 1982 to score four goals in a single-game. The rookie tallied a hat trick in just a 6:14 span and broke the school freshman record with his fourth tally in the 76th minute as St. John's blew past New Hampshire, 5-0 on Thursday night. The midfielder now ranks third all-time in single-game goals (4) and points (8), trailing Bischoff's pair of five-goal outings over 40 years ago.
The Sao Paolo, Brazil native is currently tied for the highest single-game goal total in NCAA Division I this season and became the first rookie to net four or more goals since VMI's Justin Reischer on Oct. 2, 2018.
After Thursday's memorable performance, Gomes followed it up with a 90-minute outing at No. 5 Wake Forest holding the Demon Deacons scoreless in the 0-0 draw.
The midfielder has started all four matches for the Johnnies and currently ranks second in NCAA Division I with four goals and ninth in points with eight. The rookie leads the BIG EAST in both categories. Earlier today, the freshman was tabbed TopDrawer Soccer National Player of the Week.
McLachlan notched a pair of clean sheets last week in the win over New Hampshire and the draw at No. 5 Wake Forest. The netminder has recorded three clean sheets in the opening four matches, ranking tied for second in the nation in that category. The Stockport, England native tallied six saves last week, including a pair of crucial stops in Winston-Salem on Sunday.
The senior holds a 0.50 GAA and .818 save rate after four contests. McLachlan earns the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honor for the second time in his tenure at St. John's and the first since Oct. 9, 2023.
The Johnnies will face their second straight top-five opponent on Friday when they welcome No. 2 Marshall. To purchase tickets to catch all the action at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium, click here.
