St. John’s Volleyball Downs Siena at Syracuse Invitational, 3-1

Jones notches third triple-double in last six matches
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team (4-8, 0-0 BIG EAST) dominated the fourth set to clinch its second straight victory sinking Siena (3-8, 0-0 MAAC), 3-1, in the first of its two matches on Saturday.
Senior Erin Jones led the charge collecting her third triple-double of the season. The reigning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the week logged 11 kills, 23 assists and 14 digs to post her third triple-double in her last six matches.
The Red Storm recorded a season-high 54 kills with three players finishing with double-digit kills in the Women's Building. The Johnnies delivered 11 service aces in the convincing victory over the Saints. The scores of the sets were 25-19, 25-20, 25-20 and 25-8.
"I'm proud of this team win," Head Coach Joanne Persico said. "In a great fourth set, Erin [Jones] lead us from the service line as we dominated on the offensive side of the net."
Freshman Kendall White had a match-high 12 kills, and Ana Franca Benjamim collected 11 kills. Martina Capponcelli and Jones each dished out a match-high 23 assists. Rashanny Solano Smith tallied a team-high 15 digs, while Benjamim added 12 digs to notch her first career double-double.
The Johnnies were able to capitalize off multiple Siena miscues early in the first set, forcing the visitors to take their first timeout at 5-1. As the match continued, St. John's maintained a well-balanced attack using a 5-3 run capped by a Jones kill to stretch the advantage, 13-7. After both sides traded points, the Johnnies used 4-2 run capped with a Kya Harris and Jones block to take the opening set, 25-19.
Starting the second frame, St. John's rallied to a 6-2 lead. Capponcelli served an ace to put the home team up 12-7. The Saints made a push to cut the lead down to as little as two at 13-11. After the media timeout at 15-11, Seina cut the deficit to just two point, 17-15. Later in the frame, another Capponcelli ace triggered the second set point of the match for St. John's, and Jones kill wrapped up the set 25-20.
To start the third stanza saw Siena jump out to an early lead, but Shiloh Clayton stepped up to the service line and helped propel the St. John's offense to four unanswered points, 4-2 in the early going. The Red Storm's lead started to bubble and grew to as many as five before Siena used a 7-1 rally to erase the deficit and forced a Red Storm timeout at 12-11. As the stanza continued the Saints lead also increased to as many as five, 20-15. St. John's attempted to claw back using kills from Chloe Bell to bring the score to 23-19. The Saints held on to capture the third set, 25-20.
St. John's opened the fourth set firing jumping out to 7-1 cushion and never looked back. The Red Storm lead ballooned to as many as 15-2. The Johnnies continued to dominate the set and rolled to a 25-8 win. The 17-point margin is the largest margin of victory in a single set this season.
The Red Storm return to the Women's Building later tonight at 6 p.m. to conclude the Syracuse Invitational against Syracuse.
