St. John’s Volleyball Wraps Up Non-Conference Slate at Syracuse Invitational

The Red Storm will play three games over two days
QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's volleyball team will conclude the non-conference portion of its schedule this weekend at the Syracuse Invitational.
The tournament features Le Moyne, Siena and hosts Syracuse. All three matches take place in the Women's Building and will be streamed on ESPN+. St. John's begins the Syracuse Invitational on Friday at 2 p.m. when it takes on Le Moyne. On Saturday, the squad play two games with the first match set for 11 a.m. against Siena, before rounding out the tournament against Syracuse at 6 p.m.
The Red Storm (2-8, 0-0 BIG EAST) hosted the Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic last weekend, picking up wins over Marist and Delaware State. Senior Erin Jones helped guide the team with triple-doubles in both victories, which was enough to be named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week. Against Marist, the senior finished with a game-high 15 kills, adding 11 assists and 10 digs for her first triple-double of the season in a convincing win over the Red Foxes. In a 3-1 victory over Delaware State, she secured a line of a team-high 15 kills, 17 assists and 12 digs for her second triple-double of the weekend. Freshman Kendall White was also named to the All-Tournament team. The Peachtree Corners, Ga., native had a career high seven kills against Delaware State. Lucrezia Lodi posted her best stretch of matches to date. The senior outside hitter contributed 10 kills against Marist, eight digs against tournament champion West Virginia and three blocks in the win over Delaware State.
Head Coach Joanne Persico will return to her alma mater for the first time since 2012. An Orange Plus Hall of Famer, Persico was named BIG EAST Player of the Year and team MVP following the 1986 season. In 1985, she received the Verhulst Award, which is given to Syracuse's Sportswoman of the Year.
Le Moyne enters the Syracuse Invitational with a 1-8 overall record. First year head coach Fiona Cuningham came to Le Moyne from East Carolina University and leads a young Dolphins team that was selected to finish ninth in the NEC Coaches' Poll. On Wednesday, Le Moyne fell to Canisius in straight sets at home. Last weekend, the Dolphins dropped two matches at the Navy Invitational, falling in straight sets to Gardner-Webb and Navy in Annapolis, Md. This will be the first time that both St. John's and Le Moyne will square off since Le Moyne's transition to the Division I level in 2023.
Siena enters the weekend with a 3-6 overall record. First year head coach Tyler Kanelos came to Siena with a 237-76 overall record across the Division I and II levels at Marshall, Dayton, University of Arkansas- Fort Smtih and University of West Florida. Last weekend in its home tournament, Siena, who was selected to finish 10th in the MAAC, swept Stonehill and dropped two competitive matches to both Belmont and Columbia. Last time out against Siena, the Red Storm walked away with a 3-1 win in Queens on Sept. 8, 2023, during the Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic.
The Orange gets set to host its home invitational following a 6-2 start. Head Coach Bakeer Ganesharatnam enters his fourth season at the helm of the Orange volleyball program. After winning their first six matches the Orange dropped their last two in a series against rival Colgate, falling 3-1 both times. Captains Gabriella McLaughlin and Tehya Maeva arrived at Syracuse this season from the University of Nevada after playing the past two seasons together. McLaughlin paces the team with 112 kills and Maeva leads Syracuse with 257 assists, averaging 9.51 assists per set. The Red Storm and Orange will renew their old BIG EAST rivalry for the first time in 13 years. In their last meeting, Syracuse won in a 3-1 decision on Nov. 2, 2012.
Following the Syracuse Invitational, the Johnnies will return home and begin BIG EAST play. Their first matches feature Villanova on Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. and Georgetown on Sept.
27 at 5 p.m. in Queens.
