Jones leads the way with nine kills, nine digs
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team (4-10, 0-2 BIG EAST) fell to Georgetown (9-6, 2-0 BIG EAST) on Saturday evening at Carnesecca Arena, 3-0.
After St. John's lost its setter in the opening set due to an injury, the Johnnies offense could not generate enough offense to keep up with the Hoyas. The scores of the sets were 25-18, 25-16 and 25-13.
Senior Erin Jones led the Johnnies with nine kills and had to transition to the full-time setter for the Red Storm after the injury, logging 12 assists. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Ella Parker and sophomore outside hitter Barbara Costa Dos Santos each added five apiece to aid the offense. Rashanny Solano Smith and Jones each collected nine digs.
In the first set, St. John's struck first before Georgetown orchestrated a 4-0 run, forcing an early timeout. The Hoyas continued to push the pace and put the Red Storm into an early 17-8 hole. St. John's responded, facilitating a 6-1 run of their own to cut the deficit to four. Behind another 4-0 run, Georgetown regained a commanding lead, resulting in a 25-18 win for the visitors in the first set.
The second frame belonged to the Hoyas, who built on an early 2-1 lead by ripping off a 6-0 scoring run. Georgetown's advantage grew to as many as 13, as the Johnnies found themselves trailing 21-8. Parker's four second-set kills propelled the Red Storm to an 8-2 run, cutting into the lead, but a quick Georgetown response secured the frame, 25-16.
The third stanza followed a similar trend to the second, as Georgetown jumped out to a quick lead despite St. John's striking first. The Hoyas relied on several runs to mound a substantial lead over the Red Storm. Despite trying to claw its way back, St. John's fell in the final stanza 25-13.
St. John's heads to Providence, R.I. for an Oct. 3 matchup with Providence at 5 p.m. The following day, the Red Storm will take on UConn in Storrs, Conn. at 4 p.m.
