The Red Storm will play three games in four days
HONOLULU, Hawaii (Sept. 3, 2025)- The St. John's volleyball program remains on the road for three matches in the OUTRIGGER Invitational hosted by Hawaii. The Red Storm will take on Utah Valley, San Jose State and Hawaii, traveling outside the continental United Stated for the first time since 2019.
The Johnnies and Utah Valley will face off for the first time in program history to open the invitational on Thursday, Sept. 4 at 10:45 p.m. ET. The next day, the team matches up with San Jose State at 10:45 p.m. ET. After an off day on Saturday, St. John's closes the tournament against Hawaii at 11 p.m. ET with the match being streamed on ESPN+.
The Red Storm (0-3, 0-0 BIG EAST) are looking to pick up their first win of the 2025 season after falling in all three matches of the Cardinal Classic in Louisville, Ky. Senior Erin Jones was named to the All-Tournament Team for her performances, finishing with 28 kills, 36 assists and 20 digs over the three-match tournament. Junior Rashanny Solano Smith recorded her 1,000th career dig against Auburn.
Freshman Martina Ghezzi recorded her first double-double as a Johnnie against Auburn, finishing with 12 kills and 16 digs. Fellow freshman Chloe Bell blocked a total of six shots while adding 13 kills in 10 sets of work.
For their first match, St. John's plays Utah Valley (1-2, 0-0 WAC) for the first time in each program's history. Utah Valley defeated Montana to open their season but dropped the following matches to Navy in four sets and to Boise State in five sets.
The next day, the Red Storm will square off with San Jose State (0-2, 0-0 Mountain West) for the third time all-time meeting. The Spartans fell in both of their matches to UC Santa Barbara. The last time out against the Spartans, the Johnnies won in a 3-1 decision back on Sept. 1, 2008, to even the all-time series at 1-1.
Rounding out play in the Aloha State, St. John's take on hosts Hawaii. The Rainbow Warriors (0-3, 0-0 Big West) lost to BIG EAST conference foe Marquette in five sets, before getting swept by both Utah State and San Diego. The last time out against the hosts, the Red Storm fell 3-2 back on Sept. 1, 2019 as Klara Mikelova, Rachele Rastelli, Efrosini Alexakou and Erica Di Maulo all registered double digit kills for St. John's in the five-set thriller.
The Red Storm travels back to the east coast and will host the Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic as action inside Carnesecca Arena kicks-off on Sept. 12-14.
