St. John’s Heads to Butler for Tuesday Night Contest

The Red Storm men’s basketball team squares off with the Bulldogs at 7 p.m. on Peacock
QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's basketball team will hit the road for a Tuesday contest against Butler inside historic Hinkle Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.
The game will air on NBC Sports Network and Peacock with Noah Reed and Nick Bahe on the call from Indianapolis. The LEARFIELD St. John's Radio Network broadcast will be available with John Minko and Vin Parise on ESPN New York 880 AM. The radio call will also be available on ESPN New York App, the Varsity Network, TuneIn, Sirius XM Channel 85, the SiriusXM App and the St. John's Red Storm App.
In its last contest, St. John's (9-5, 2-1 BIG EAST) fell to Providence, 77-71, after leading for 36:05 of game time on Saturday at Madison Square Garden. Zuby Ejiofor tied a career-high with 33 points and 15 rebounds, including 11 offensive boards at The World's Most Famous Arena.
Following the performance, Ejiofor was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday for the second time this season. Last week, the forward averaged 29.0 points on 60.0 percent shooting, 12.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 8.0 offensive boards per contest, the latter of which ranked atop the nation for the week. Ejiofor tied or set new career-bests in seven statistical categories over the last two games.
On the season, the Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year is leading the team in scoring (15.9 PPG), rebounds (7.9 RPG), assists (3.0 APG) and blocks (2.4 BPG), the latter of which ranks top-20 in NCAA Division I.
The Red Storm has been one of the nation's top teams when it comes to getting to the free throw line this season. The Johnnies rank sixth in free throw attempts (28.4 per game) and fifth in makes (20.9 per game). On Saturday, Ejiofor took 23 free throws, which was the second most in program history and the most by any BIG EAST player since Marquette's Markus Howard on March 15, 2019. The big man sits 11th in attempts and 29th overall in NCAA Division I as of Jan. 5.
Each of the Johnnies next two games present a Quad 1 opportunity at both Butler (No. 48) and Creighton (No. 51) in the NET rankings. The Red Storm has seven remaining Quad 1 chances over the next 17 BIG EAST games, as of Jan. 5.
Tuesday's contest will feature two of the nation's best on the offensive glass. St. John's ranks 14th in the country logging 14.3 offensive rebounds per game, while Butler sits ninth in the country grabbing 14.5 per contest. Ejiofor (3.8 orpg) and Butler's Michael Ajayi (4.0 orpg) both rank inside the top-15 in offensive rebounds per game.
St. John's and Butler will meet for the 28th time with the Johnnies leading the all-time series, 16-11. The Red Storm has won six straight and nine of the last 10 contests, dating back to Feb. 5, 2022. Two of St. John's four all-time wins at Hinkle Fieldhouse have come in the last two seasons.
Butler (10-5, 1-3 BIG EAST) will also look to get back on track after an 85-67 defeat to Villanova during its last contest. After finishing the non-conference slate with a 9-2 record, the Bulldogs have dropped three consecutive BIG EAST contests.
The Bulldogs are led by guard Finley Bizjack (16.0 ppg) and forward Michael Ajayi (16.3 ppg) with both players ranking top-six in the BIG EAST in scoring. In the rebounding category, Ajayi leads all of NCAA Division I averaging 12.3 boards per contest.
