Red Storm returns to action on Saturday at Seton Hall
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Facing its fourth ranked opponent in just 13 games this season, the St. John's men's soccer team fell to No. 14 Maryland, 1-0, on Tuesday night at Ludwig Field.
The Red Storm (5-6-2, 1-1-2 BIG EAST) held serve with the 14th ranked Terrapins for more than 60 minutes before freshman forward Rodrigo Neri, a youth academy product of Athletico Madrid, scored the lone goal of the match off an assist from sophomore Farouk Cisse.
Tuesday night marked the final non-conference match of the season for the Red Storm, which owns one of the nation's strongest schedules and has played nearly the entire season hampered by injury.
The Terrapins (9-3-1, 3-3-1 Big Ten) held an 11-2 edge in shots at the intermission, but the Red Storm kept the score level thanks in large part to the goalkeeping of Nico Bezama, who logged all five of his saves in the opening 45 minutes. Bezama's five stops marked his second-highest single-game total of the season.
After Maryland took the lead in the 60th minute, the Red Storm applied pressure but could not break through. The Red Storm recorded all three of its second-half shots in the final 25 minutes, including a 74th minute attempt from Lohkoah Paye that was smothered by Maryland keeper Laurin Mack.
Paye was one of five Johnnies to play the full 90 minutes on Tuesday night alongside Erik Kringstad, Camron Boumsong, Cayden Walton and Kaief Tomlinson.
The Red Storm will begin the second half of BIG EAST play on Saturday with a short trip to Seton Hall. Kick-off from Owen T. Carroll Field is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
