Red Storm rallies in thrilling fashion to take down the rival Huskies
QUEENS, N.Y. – Trailing 2-0 with just over eight minutes remaining, the St. John's men's soccer team mounted an unforgettable comeback on Tuesday night, scoring three late goals and picking up a crucial win over BIG EAST rival UConn, 3-2, at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
With the win, the Red Storm improves to 6-7-2, 2-2-2 in league play, and remains alive for a BIG EAST Tournament berth with just two regular season games remaining. The Huskies moved to 7-7-2, 3-3-0 in the conference.
"We were disappointed to go down 2-0 and have had some hard luck during the year, but the guys have learned to keep fighting and keep pushing," said Head Coach Dr. David Masur. "I'm really pleased to win against a rival in a big game. I'm really proud of the guys."
The Red Storm fell behind 1-0 in the 26th minute and missed several chances to equalize before UConn extended the lead to 2-0 in the 81st minute.
With their backs against the wall and their postseason hopes hanging in the balance, the Johnnies mounted one of the most incredible comebacks in the program's proud history.
103 seconds after UConn took a 2-0 lead, the Red Storm cut the deficit in half. Kaief Tomlinson sent a long ball into the box that found the head of a St. John's player on the far side of the six-yard box. A scramble ensued in front. Cayden Walton put a shot on target that was blocked, but the rebound came back his way, and the sophomore buried the second chance, putting the Red Storm within a goal.
Just over five minutes later, the Red Storm pulled even. The sequence began with the Johnnies drawing a foul in front of their own bench. Ander Gonzalez stood over the lengthy free kick and sent it into the middle of the box, where it deflected off the head of Walton before finding Henrik Ropstad. The junior forward, who had entered the game just minutes before, headed it home and evened the score at two apiece with less than three minutes to go.
With a point all but secured, the Red Storm did not let up. UConn's Kyle Durham sent a goal kick past midfield with 30 seconds remaining. Scott Wilhelmsen won the head down to Ropstad, who flicked it high into the air toward Luca Fargnoli. The junior corralled it 30 yards from goal, dribbled to his right and unleashed with his right foot, tucking the ball inside the lower-left corner past the diving hands of Durham and securing an unlikely, yet unforgettable win for the Red Storm.
Fargnoli's game-winner was his team-leading fourth of the season. Walton and Ropstad each recorded a goal and an assist. Ropstad's effort was made even more impressive given the fact that he logged just nine minutes on the evening. Gonzalez and Wilhelmsen, each of whom was recently named to TopDrawerSoccer's Freshman Top 100 list, picked up assists.
Sophomore goalkeeper Nico Bezama tallied six saves on the evening, including a stopped penalty kick with 24 minutes remaining to keep the Johnnies within one. It marked his second straight game with a half-dozen saves, one off his season high of seven.
The Red Storm has two BIG EAST regular season games remaining beginning with a Saturday night showdown against Marquette in Queens. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
