Redshirt junior forward averaged 14.0 rebounds in 1-1 week for the Red Storm
NEW YORK – For the second time this season, St. John's women's basketball forward Daniela Abies was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, the league office announced on Monday.
Abies averaged 14.0 rebounds and 9.5 points on 66.7% (6-9) shooting from the field and 70% (7-10) from the charity stripe in a split week for the Red Storm.
The Málaga, Spain native started in both games against Georgetown and Seton Hall. She was tied as St. John's leading scorer in the 59-56 road victory over the Pirates, helping secure the program's first regular-season sweep of Seton Hall since 2019-20.
Abies tallied seven points, two assists and a block, while pulling down a team-high nine rebounds and matching her career-best with four steals against Georgetown.
The forward notched her third double-double of the season in a 59-56 road win at Seton Hall, leading the team with 12 points and a season-high 19 rebounds. Her 19 boards were just three shy of her career high and accounted for nearly half of the team's total rebounds. It marked the highest rebounding performance by a Red Storm player since Kayla Charles grabbed 20 rebounds on Dec. 9, 2018.
The Wichita State transfer captured her second weekly honor in the BIG EAST. The redshirt junior is one of three players to be recognized by the league this season, joining Brooke Moore and Sa'Mya Wyatt.
Abies and the Red Storm will return to host No.1/1 UConn for the regular season at Madison Square Garden, for the program's first-ever standalone women's college basketball game, on March 1. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and will be nationally televised on TNT/truTV. Fans can purchase tickets to the game here.
