6-foot-8 forward taken 40th overall by the Boston Celtics
BROOKLYN, N.Y. – After closing a decorated college career by leading St. John's to its first Sweet 16 berth in nearly three decades, St. John's forward Dillon Mitchell has been selected by the Boston Celtics in the second round of the 2026 NBA Draft.
Mitchell, who was taken with the 40th overall pick, joins teammate Zuby Ejiofor, who was drafted 23rd overall by the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday. This marks the first time since 2000 that two Johnnies have been selected in the same draft (Erick Barkley and Lavor Postell). It is the 16th time in program history that two St. John's players have been picked in the same draft.
A dynamic 6-foot-8 forward, Mitchell quickly became a fan favorite during his lone season in Queens. A lockdown defender with explosive athleticism on both ends of the floor, Mitchell averaged 8.3 points on 55.9% shooting, 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.7 blocks per contest. He logged four double-doubles and posted an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3-to-1, good enough for tops in the BIG EAST and 27th nationally.
For his efforts, Mitchell earned spots on the All-BIG EAST Third Team, the BIG EAST All-Defensive Team, the MBWA All-Met Second Team, the NABC All-District Second Team and the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team.
Before St. John's, Mitchell spent a year at Cincinnati and two seasons at Texas. He made two NCAA Tournament appearances while in Austin, including an Elite Eight run as a freshman in 2022-23. Mitchell pulled down 903 rebounds over the course of his four-year college career, good enough for 11th among active players at the time of his graduation.
Mitchell was a consensus five-star recruit in the high school class of 2022, finishing fourth in the ESPN Top 100 and earning invitations to the McDonald's All-America Game and the Jordan Brand Classic. He led Montverde to the GEICO High School National Championship as a senior, averaging 12.3 points, 10.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per contest.
