Issa Atcha Yaya and Travis Thompson tally goals to lift the Red Storm

QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's soccer team utilized an extra-man advantage in the second half to down Fordham, 2-0, at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.

After a second yellow card for Fordham put the Red Storm (3-3-0, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) up a man in the 36^th minute. The Red Storm turned up the heat in the latter stanza engineering a pair of goals to power past its local foe on Sunday night.

Travis Thompson tallied the game-winner in the 67^th minute on a glancing header. The goal marked the Garden City native's second of the season. In his first collegiate start, Issa Atcha Yaya doubled the Johnnies advantage with just over 10 minutes to play with a dazzling finish.

Aron Wilhelmsen provided the service on Thompson's goal off a free kick to register his first collegiate point. Andrew Porucznik played the through ball to Atcha Yaya for his second helper of the season.

Nico Bezama tallied his third clean sheet of the 2026 campaign, while Xavi Abeijon led all players with three total shots.

After a stagnant first 20 minutes, Zander Romero had the first opportunity in the 22^nd minute. Off a free kick, the junior midfielder attempted a bicycle kick strike off the bouncing centering cross that steered to the right.

On another free kick, the Red Storm generated another chance as Aryeh Miller headed a ball that bounced off the crossbar, narrowly missing in the 33^rd minute.

The game took a turn just a few minutes later the Rams' (2-4-1, 0-0-0 A-10) Marc-Alexandre Happi Emaga was assessed his second yellow of the evening and was sent off. The Red Storm played with an extra-man advantage for the final 56 minutes of the contest.

The two sides went into the locker room with the score level and the Johnnies holding the advantage in shots taken, 7-2.

As the latter stanza got underway and fireworks went off in the distance of Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium, Camron Boumsong provided the first chance with a strike on target that was corralled with ease by Fordham goalkeeper Shayon Kashi.

After a failed challenge for a handball, the Red Storm still had a free kick opportunity from 25 yards out. Aron Wilhelmsen delivered a curling cross into the box that Thompson leaped in the air to meet the ball and launch it into the twine in the 69^th minute to take a 1-0 lead.

In the 79^th minute, Porucznik carried the ball through the midfield and played a forward pass to Atcha Yaya. The sophomore got free with a move from just inside the 18-yard box and sent a powering drive to the bottom right corner to double the Johnnies advantage, 2-0.

The Red Storm will open up BIG EAST play on Friday night when it hosts Villanova for a 7 p.m. start at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
