QUEENS, N.Y. – Following a marquee non-conference victory over Florida International on Sunday, St. John's will return to the road to meet former BIG EAST rival Syracuse on Wednesday night.
The 36th meeting between the programs will kick-off at 7 p.m. from SU Soccer Stadium. The contest will be streamed on ACC Network Xtra with Timmy Weiss and Andrew Forester on the call from Central New York.
The Red Storm is coming off a hard-fought 1-0 victory on Sunday night over Florida International at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium. In a physical battle that featured 41 fouls and eight bookings, Xavi Abeijon's made penalty in the 59th proved to be the difference in the 1996 National Championship game rematch.
The goal from Abeijon marked his first of the season after dishing out a pair of assists in the season-opening win at Loyola Maryland on Aug. 20. The sophomore forward ranks tied for second on the team in points (4) and first in shot attempts (10).
The made penalty kick marked the 14th straight successful attempt for the Red Storm, dating back to Sept. 8, 2023, exactly three years ago.
In net, Nico Bezama recorded his second clean sheet of the season on Sunday. The two shutouts ranks tied for 18th in NCAA Division I. In the win over FIU, the sophomore logged a career-high four saves, including a pair of game-saving stops in the final two minutes of the match.
The two original members of the BIG EAST Conference will meet on the pitch for the 36th time but first since the 2019 NCAA Tournament Second Round. The Johnnies lead the all-time series, 20-9-6 and are 10-2-3 against the Orange over the last 15 meetings. The two squads squared off annually from 1986-2012 but have only met three times in the regular season since Syracuse joined the ACC in 2013.
In the last meeting, then-No. 16 St. John's utilized a pair of first half goals to move past Syracuse, 2-1, and into the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 at Belson Stadium on Nov. 24, 2019. The Red Storm hold an 8-6-3 all-time record on the road in Syracuse.
The Orange under the direction of Head Coach Ian McIntyre is 3-2 on the year and dropped its ACC opener to No. 13 Clemson its last time out, 1-0. Syracuse and St. John's have already faced two common opponents in the early going of the 2026 campaign. Both sides fell to New Hampshire and defeated Loyola Maryland.
The Orange are led by Bryan Rordiguez, the sophomore has tallied a team-high six points (two goals, two assists) through five matches. Syracuse ranks 17th in the country with 13 assists on the year as four players have logged multiple helpers.
