After serving as the head women's and assistant men's track coach from 1986-2003, Ray Howell returned to St. John's University as the Associate Director of Academic Support for Student-Athletes in 2008. Howell's primary function is assisting student-athletes in managing their academic requirements. Howell works with the women's basketball, men's soccer, men's and women's fencing and softball teams.
Howell, a former student-athlete at St. John's, was the recipient of the University's President's Award for Academics. He was named NCAA Regional Coach of the year in 1989, 1998 and 2000. He also served as ECAC and BIG EAST Conference President.
Howell earned a bachelor's degree in English in 1983 and a master's degree in education from St. John's in 1990. He was formerly the director of the Teachers' Professional Development at Stony Brook University and has been a classroom teacher at the secondary and University levels.
