The win was the second in a row for the Flyers, who improve to 11-7 on the season. The Storm saw their three-game winning streak come to an end, as they fall to 18-5. Three of the Storms five losses this year have come in five-game matches.
After a brilliant first game in which the Storm bolted to an 8-1 lead and went on to win 15-4, the Flyers maintained the upperhand in the second game. Dayton hit .417 on 19 kills and only four errors to tie the match at 1-1 with a 15-7 victory.
In the third game the Storm trailed early, but got back on track when senior Olga Roudovski (Brooklyn, N.Y./Sheepshead Bay) served up a pair of consecutive service aces to tie the game at 6-6. SJU then took an 8-7 lead on a kill by senior Amanda Berg (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) and never trailed again. Freshman Rosalyn Dang (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) put the game away with one of her 13 kills as the Storm went on to win, 15-9. The Flyers took control again in the fourth game, jumping out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back. The closest the Storm got was 11-4 at one point, but Dayton went on to force a decisive rally-scoring fifth game with a 15-4 victory in game four.
Neither team was able to make a definitive run to put the game away for most of the fifth game, as the score was tied four times. At 11-11, the Flyers made their move. Moxley smacked down a kill to give the Flyers a 12-11 edge. From there, block assists from Susan Westbrock and Sierra Ashley, a kill by Westbrock and an ace by Ferriell quickly spelled defeat for the Red Storm.
Roudovski tied her season-high with 27 kills, to go along with 16 digs. Dang added 13 kills, six assists and six digs, while junior Kristy Mercein (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) led the defense with 17 digs and nine kills. Freshman Robyn Kurasaki (Milliani, Hawaii/Maryknoll) assisted on 49 kills and had 10 digs, and Berg finished with eight kills, seven digs and four blocks.
The Storm return to action on Tuesday, October 17, when they travel Brooklyn to face cross-town rival Long Island at 7:00 in a non-conference matchup.
