The win improves SJU to 11-3-2 overall and 8-2-1 in the BIG EAST, clinching at least one of the top two seeds in the conference tournament, which opens on November 4-5 at the home of the higher seeded teams. The Red Storm wrapped up BIG EAST play with 17 points. Second-place UCONN would need to win its final two games, against Villanova and Rutgers, to win the league outright and claim the No. 1 seed.
The Red Storm attacked Providence from the opening kickoff, with Theorides taking two shots in the first five minutes of the game, and shots by junior Shalrie Joseph (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior Rich Bradley (Bayport, N.Y.) just off the mark. In the 26th minute, freshman Marlon Rojas (Peytonville, Arima, Trinidad) was taken down in the box and St. Johns received a penalty kick. A shot by junior Jeff Matteo (Stormville, N.Y.), however, was read correctly by Providence goalkeeper Danny Glynn, keeping the game scoreless.
Shortly after, sophomore Dave ODonnell (Nashua, N.H.) directed a pass to Theorides on the right side of the box. Theorides took a low shot from 15 yards out that beat Glynn just inside the far post for a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, St. Johns controlled play in the midfield during most of the second half and continued to press the Providence goal with shots. With 15 seconds remaining in the game, Joseph took a pass from Bradley and had a one-on-one with Glynn, who he beat from 15 yards out to increase the margin to 2-0.
Senior goalkeeper Jeff Stoklosa (Newark, Del.) made two saves and improved his record to 6-2-2 this season, with six shutouts. He improved his goals against average this season to 0.50 and his career mark now stands at 0.69.
The shutout for the Red Storm, their second straight, and seventh in 10 BIG EAST matches this season, ranks 11th all-time in a season at St. Johns.
St. Johns out-shot Providence, 12-3, and took four corner kicks, with the Friars taking none.
The Red Storm close out the regular season next weekend, playing in the BellSouth Classic in Tampa, Florida. St. Johns will open on Friday, October 27 against Florida International, who they beat for the 1996 NCAA Championship, and play Butler on Sunday, October 29.
