The winner of Sundays match will advance to the third round, where they will play the winner of the Creighton-San Diego match.
This is the fifth-straight year that St. Johns has advanced to the second round in the NCAA Tournament. One of only five teams to reach the NCAA Tournament in the last nine years, the Red Storm program is the only school in the country to have reached the Sweet Sixteen the last five years.
The Red Storm, 14-4-2 overall, won their first round match against James Madison on Saturday, 1-0. St. Johns junior Shalrie Joseph (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored his team-leading 14th goal of the season at 75:50 mark with assists from Jeff Matteo (Stormville, N.Y.) and Rich Bradley (Bayport, N.Y.).
Virginia enters the game with a 16-5-1 overall record, following Sundays 5-0 win over Lehigh during the first round. Freshman forward Alecko Eskandarian leads the Cavaliers with 16 goals and six assists for 38 points this season.
The teams met earlier this year, playing to a 1-1 tie in the Maryland FILA Preseason Classic in College Park. Senior Antonis Theorides (Astoria, N.Y.) scored the Red Storms lone goal, while senior Jeffrey Stoklosa (Newark, Del.) recorded three saves in goal.
St. Johns and Virginia have only met once before during the regular season, with the Cavaliers posting a 2-0 win during the 1994 regular season.
