TEAM AMERICA RETURNS FROM GREECE
6/12/2000 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
After only one practice as a team, the All-Stars took on DASAL, an A-1 pro team in Athens, Greece. Despite the lack of international experience on the All-Star squad, Team America hung with DASAL, falling 59-57. Game 2 proved to be the break-out game for the All-Stars, as they cruised to a 97-57 victory over Niki Volos. In Game 3, their foe was Panseraikos, a top A-2 pro team, which eked out a 78-76 win over the All-Stars. The All-Stars evened their record at 2-2 in Game 4 with a 64-57 decision over M. Alexanderos.
The All-Stars then engaged in a three-game series with the former Yugoslavia Republic of Macedonian national team, which was preparing for the 2000 Summer Olympic Games. After falling in the first game 61-57, the All-Stars rebounded with a 71-67 victory before dropping the rubber game 73-64.
Celia Anderson of Arkansas led the All-Stars, averaging 10 points and eight rebounds per game, while Selena Ho of Pacific averaged 8.3 points, three steals and two assists per contest. Johns added 5.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.
"Everyone was really nice and I really learned a lot," said Johns. "The competition was really stiff, but I think our team got along great and we meshed really well."
"I wanted to give the young ladies a positive learning experience through basketball and most importantly, through the different countries," said Estep. "Overall, the young ladies were able to appreciate the difference in the cultures, not only state-to-state but internationally as well. It was a great bonding situation, and everyone treated us very well. The student-athletes represented themselves, their institutions and the United States in a first-class manner.Game-By-Game Results
