Volleyball Team Wins CCSU Tournament

(New Britain, Conn.) - The St. John's volleyball team won all three matches this weekend at the Central Connecticut State Tournament in New Britain, Conn. The team now owns a 3-0 record, which marks the third time in the seven-year history of the program that the team started the season with three straight wins. Senior Olga Roudovski (Brooklyn, N.Y./Sheepshead Bay) recorded her 1,000th career kill during the Red Storm's second match against Central Connecticut, making her only the third volleyball player in school history to reach that plateau. Roudovski led the Red Storm in kills in two of the three matches, and recorded 33 kills for the tournament. She now has 1,020 kills for her career. After earning four-game victories in the first two matches, the Red Storm finished off Holy Cross (15-6, 15-12, 16-14) in three straight to earn the tournament crown. Roudovski recorded a "double double" with 11 kills and 13 digs. Senior Amanda Berg (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) chipped in with nine kills and a pair of aces.
St. John's took on host Central Connecticut in the second match, defeating the Blue Devils in four games (12-15, 15-6, 15-8, 15-3). Roudovski led the Red Storm to the win with 12 kills. Roudovski also added five blocks and five digs. Senior Stephanie Luehr (Wood River, Neb./Wood River) put in a solid defensive effort with a team-high 10 digs. Junior Kristy Mercein (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) also had a fine match, contributing eight kills and six digs. In the first game on Friday against Texas-El Paso, the Red Storm earned their first win of the season with a four-game victory (15-11, 5-15, 15-13, 15-4). Freshman Rosalyn Dang (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) had an impressive collegiate debut, recording a team-high 15 kills and hit .423 for the match. Seniors Aleeza Miller (Los Angeles, Calif./Cal-Berkeley) and Roudovski also recorded double figures in kills with 13 and 10, respectively. Freshman Robyn Kurasaki (Milliani, Hawaii/Maryknoll) also stepped up in her first game for St. John's, tallying 43 assists, five digs and pair of kills.
The Red Storm will return home on Tuesday, September 5, to host St. Peter's in a non-conference match at Alumni Hall at 7:00 p.m.
