VOLLEYBALL DOWNS ST. PETER'S IN FIVE

JAMAICA, N.Y. - Senior Olga Roudovski (Brooklyn, N.Y./Sheepshead Bay) had 18 kills and 18 digs to lead the St. John's University volleyball team to its first home win of the season over St. Peter's College in Alumni Hall Tuesday night. The win, which went to five games (15-10, 8-15, 15-7, 13-15, 17-15), was the fourth straight for the Red Storm, who are 4-0 for only the second time in the program's seven-year history. The Peahens fell to 1-4 on the season.
Roudovski was one of four St. John's players in double figures in kills. Senior Amanda Berg (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) posted 16 kills, while junior Kristy Mercein (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) had 15 and senior Aleeza Miller (Los Angeles, Calif./Cal-Berkeley) smacked down 13. St. John's also played a tremendous defensive game, posting 17 blocks and digging out 98 balls. Freshman Robyn Kurasaki (Milliani, Haw./Maryknoll) had a phenomenal match, assisting on 68 kills to go along with 26 digs.
The Peahens were led by junior Valentina Zaharieva (Varna, Bulgaria/Peter Beron) who had 25 kills and 23 digs. Senior Iliana Valtchanova (Varna, Bulgaria/Georgi Benkovski) also had a fine match, with 17 kills and 15 digs.
The Red Storm will continue their five-match homestand this weekend hosting the SJU Classic in Alumni Hall. Action gets under way Friday, September 8 at 4:00, when St. Francis takes on Princeton. SJU's first match is at 6:00 on Friday against Manhattan. This tournament will continue into Saturday.
