St. John's falls to 15-3 overall while Miami improves to 8-7.
This match was the first meeting between this two programs. Miami is in its first season of volleyball since 1981 and will join the BIG EAST conference next year. The Red Storm is currently tied for third in the BIG EAST standings at 4-1.
The teams appeared evenly matched to begin game one. The game was tied at 22,when Miami's Gamarra put the Hurricanes up for good with a kill. Miami went on to win 30-26.
The Red Storm trailed the entire second game and eventually fell 30-21.
St. John's rallied in the third game to take a 24-19 lead. Miami then went on a five-point scoring run to tie the game at 24-24. The Hurricanes took the third game, 30-28, on an error by St. John's.
Sophomore Rosalyn Dang (Punahou, Hawaii) led the offense with a team-high 13 kills and added eight digs. Senior Kristy Mercein (East Meadow, N.Y.) recorded a match-high 14 digs, while also contributing eight kills and five block assists. Freshman Jennifer Emelogu (Austin, Texas) chipped in eight kills, eight digs and six blocks.
The Red Storm look to improve their record tomorrow in a non-conference match versus Florida International at 7 pm.
