The loss, St. Johns first this season, drops its record to 9-1-3, while OSU improves to 9-3-2.
Ohio State freshman Sammy Tamporello took a corner kick that was punched out by St. Johns junior goalkeeper Guy Hertz (Ramut-Musharon, Israel). The rebound came out to Kreinbrink, who came up in traffic and headed it for the game winner.
We did a good job in getting ahead today, but didnt take advantage of the chances we had, St. Johns Head Coach Dave Masur said. But as I told the guys afterward, this a marathon and its not a sprint.
St. Johns was the team, however, that sprinted out at the start, dominating the first half with eight shots. They took a 1-0 lead when sophomore Chris Wingert (Babylon, N.Y.) made a diving header on a corner kick by freshman midfielder Peter Philipakos (Garden City, N.Y.) at the 9:16 mark. Midway through the half, the Red Storm extended its lead to 2-0 when senior Jeff Matteo (Stormville, N.Y.) scored on a direct kick. Matteos shot hooked around the Ohio State wall and beat Buckeyes goalkeeper Chad Brown.
Ohio State attacked St. Johns to start the second half and took advantage just over 10 minutes in, when freshman Peter Withers crossed a ball up to Justin Cook, who dribbled up field and blasted a shot from about 10 yards out, beating Hertz. Five minutes later, the Buckeyes tied the game when freshman Sammy Tamporello took a pass from Cook and his shot from 12 yards out beat Hertz to the lower near post.
St. Johns had a pair of chances in the first overtime period, with shots from Shalrie Joseph (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and John Carrozza (Springfield, Pa.) both being saved by Brown. Near the end of the first overtime period, Ohio State was called for a foul with about 15 seconds left. An injury forced the referees to call time, giving SJU a chance to set a shot up. Matteos shot was blocked and the rebound bounced to sophomore Angel Rodriguez (Toms River, N.J.), whose shot was also blocked.
St. Johns outshot Ohio State, 16-8, and had seven corner kicks to the Buckeyes two. Brown made eight saves in goal for OSU, while Hertz finished with two for the Red Storm.
