UConn jumped on the Red Storm from the beginning of the match, out-hitting St. Johns .458 to -.184 in the first set. The Red Storm posted only five kills as Connecticut rolled to the 30-10 victory. The final two games were much of the same as UConn continued to attack with a .324 attack percentage for the match while St. Johns struggled to find its offensive rhythm. The Huskies took games two and three by scores of 30-21 and 30-15, respectively.
The Red Storm were led by freshman Jennifer Emelogu (Austin, Texas), who had six kills, four digs and two blocks. Senior captain Kristy Mercein (East Meadow, N.Y.) notched a team-high seven digs and the team's only service ace of the day. Mercein now has 125 career service aces.
The Red Storm conclude their home schedule this weekend with two BIG EAST matches. On Friday, November 2, SJU takes on Villanova at 7:30pm. St. John's will take on Rutgers on Sunday, November 4 at 2:00pm. Sunday's match will be the last home match for SJU's two senior captains, Kristy Mercein and Sterie Varghese.
