St. Johns Volleyball Tops Providence, 3-0

Junior Mischara Saunders (Norwalk, Calif.) led the Red Storm attack with 11 kills and seven digs. Saunders posted a season-high .429 hitting percentage, committing just two errors in 21 attempts. Senior captain Sterie Varghese (Elmont, N.Y.) served up a season-high 10 kills with a .444 hitting percentage to lead SJU. Senior captain Kristy Mercein (East Meadow, N.Y.) contributed nine kills, 11 digs and four service aces to the Red Storm victory. Sophomore Robyn Kurasaki (Millliani, Hawaii) was vital to the win, recording a team-high 13 digs and 40 assists on the night.
For Providence, Ayana Cadres led the way with 8 kills, while Annie Cella added seven kills and a team-high 13 digs. Setter Susan Fanning recorded 21 assists for the Friars, who fall to 3-12 overall and 0-5 in the BIG EAST,
St. Johns took the first game, 30-27, recording 18 kills, including five a piece for the senior captains, Varghese and Mercein. In the second game, the Friars were no contest for the Red Storm, who posted 10 kills in 20 attempts. Junior Sarah McCrary (Walnut, Calif.) captured six straight service points to put the game out of reach for Providence. St. Johns took the second game, 30-13. The Red Storm took the third game, 30-22, with Kurasaki dishing out 16 assists and Varghese chipping in four kills.
The Red Storm will return to action on Friday, October 12 in a non-conference matchup with Sacred Heart University at 7:30 pm in Alumni Hall.
