Marc Goldberg (Staten Island, NY/South Florida) held Vanderbilt to just two runs in 7.1 innings. However, the St. Johns offense didnt provide much support, supplying just one hit, a double by Charlie Bilezikjian (Staten Island, NY/Port Richmond) in the bottom of the first, in the first seven innings.
The Commodores scored once in the fourth and added a second run in the eighth before the Red Storm responded. Jason Kane (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) led off the bottom of the eighth with a double to left. Chad Cambra (Taunton, MA/Coyle-Cassidy) drove him in with a double to the other side. Cambra advanced to third on a force out by Mike Rhoads (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and scored as Mike Rozema (Fairlawn, NJ/Fairlawn) reached on an error to knot the game at two.
Tom Klemm (Salem, NH/Salem) and Bilezikjian combined to pitch a scoreless ninth, while the Red Storm left a runner stranded in their half of the ninth to send the game into extra innings.
Bilezikjian started the tenth by retiring the first two batters. Karl Nonemaker then hit a single up the middle and stole second. Bilezikjian then walked the next two batters to load the bases. Ashley Freeman then drew a bases loaded walk to bring in the go-ahead run. RJ LaSasso (Ft. Lee, NJ/St. Joes Montville) then walked the next two batters to bring the Vanderbilt lead to 5-2. Jeff Ford (Hamden, CT/Notre Dame) followed, giving up a two-run double to Scott Vanderhoff, and the Commodores a commanding 7-2 lead. Ford got leadoff hitter Kevin Geshke to pop up to second for the final out of the inning, as Vanderbilt scored five runs on two hits and batted around in the inning.
Bilezikjian got the loss, his second of the season, giving up four runs on one hit. The Red Storm will continue with their second game in the Wiregrass Classic tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. as they face host Troy State.
