Red Storm will make its 39th NCAA Tournament Appearance
MASON, Ohio – For the second time in three years and the 11th time in the storied history of the St. John's baseball program, the Johnnies are BIG EAST Tournament Champions.
With a 5-3 win over Creighton on Sunday morning at Prasco Park, the Red Storm has punched its ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the 39th time.
This is the fourth time in program history that the Johnnies have won both the BIG EAST Regular Season and Tournament Championship in the same season, as the Johnnies claimed both crowns in 2012, 2015, 2018 and now 2026.
Five Johnnies were named to the All-Tournament Team: Will Cowan, Shaun McMillan, Liam O'Leary, Jayder Raifstanger and Lewis Rodriguez. Creighton's Rocco Gump won the Jack Kaiser Award as the most outstanding player of the BIG EAST Championship.
Facing a 3-1 deficit through three and a half, the Red Storm (33-24, 15-6 BIG EAST) used a pair of two-run frames in the fourth and seventh innings to down the Bluejays (31-26, 13-8 BIG EAST) and capture the championship.
Starter Ian Mowad gave up three hits and two runs over 2.0 innings before handing the ball to the Red Storm bullpen, which delivered seven innings of one-run work to secure the league title. Tyler Longoria surrendered one hit and one unearned run over 2.0 innings before Victor Frederick twirled a trio of scoreless frames, facing the minimum to register his second win of the season. Evan Hoeckele allowed just one hit in 2.0 scoreless frames to slam the door and record his seventh save of the season.
Six Red Storm batters collected a hit, none more critical than Cowan, who singled in the game-winning run a day after recording seven RBIs against Xavier. Cristian Bernardini provided a solo shot in the bottom of the third to put St. John's on the board. Ayden Frey knocked in an insurance run in the seventh.
Creighton opened the scoring in the top of the second with a sacrifice fly before Gump belted a solo shot in the third to put the Bluejays up 2-0.
In the bottom of the frame, Bernardini got the Johnnies on the board with a solo blast of his own to make it a 2-1 contest.
The Bluejays capitalized on a series of Red Storm errors in the top of the fourth to move back ahead by a pair, 3-1.
St. John's returned the favor by taking advantage of a pair of Creighton errors in the bottom of the fourth. Raifstanger singled to right field to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a fielding error before McMillan brought him home with a bloop single to right in the following at-bat. McMillan made his way third before Frey lifted a ball to left field that was dropped
by the left fielder and allowed McMillan to knot the contest at 3-3.
After scoreless frames in the fifth and six, the Johnnies took their first and final lead in the home half of the seventh. Jon LeGrandeworked a four-pitch leadoff walk and stole second to give St. John's a runner in scoring position with no outs. After a pair of groundouts kept LeGrande on second, Adam Agresti drew an intentional walk to bring up Cowan. The designated hitter ripped a ball to the shortstop's backhand before an errant throw to second base allowed LeGrande to score and put St. John's in front, 4-3. Next up was Frey, who singled to center to score Agresti and make it a two-run game.
Hoeckele face just one batter over the minimum over the next two innings to secure the Johnnies' 11th BIG EAST title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
St. John's will discover its NCAA Tournament destination on Selection Monday when the bracket is unveiled at 12 p.m. on ESPN2.
