Ryan Kyle (Kingsville, MD/Calvert Hall) pitched five innings, giving up four runs on seven hits for his second win of the season. Greg Holmes (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) earned his fourth save, pitching four innings of relief, allowing one run on four hits.
The Red Storm offensive attack was led by Charlie Bilezikjian (Staten Island, NY/Port Richmond), who was 4-for-6 with two doubles, five RBI and three runs scored.
St. Johns opened scoring in the first inning. Mike Rozema (Fair Lawn, NJ/Moorestown) singled to shortstop and scored on an RBI double by Bilezikjian. Bilezikjian stole third and came around to score on a single by Chris Fallon (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne). Iona cut the lead to one in the second inning, but could not come closer for the rest of the game. The Red Storm added five runs in their half of the inning to give them a 7-1 lead.
In the second inning, Billy Graiser (Jericho, NY/Miller Place) lined a one-out single up the middle and advanced to second on an error by the pitcher. Rozema singled, scoring Graiser, and advanced to third on an error by the Gales catcher. Bilezikjian then doubled for the second time in the game, scoring Rozema. He stole third and scored on a double by Eric Potts (Little Ferry, NJ/Ridgefield Park). Fallon, who reached on a walk, scored on a single by Chad Cambra (Taunton, MA/Coyle and Cassidy). Cambra capped scoring by crossing home on a single to right by John-Paul Cirigliano (Flushing, NY/St. Francis Prep).
The Red Storm added one more in the bottom of the third for an 8-1 lead. However, the Gaels would answer back. Iona touched up Kyle for two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth before getting one run off of Holmes to close the gap to 8-5. But they would end scoring there, as the Red Storm scored four runs in the seventh to put the game away, 12-5. Bryan Hedgecock (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) scored on a failed pickoff attempt on Grasier and Bilezikjian hit a two-RBI single before he scored on a Potts single to left.
St. Johns will host C.W. Post tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.
