Red Storm Crushes Boston College, 4-0

The Red Storm started off the day by capturing two doubles matches. At No. 3 doubles, Cameron Lore (Toronto, Canada) and Fabian Carchi (Corona, N.Y.) easily put away Colahan and Pytko, 8-2. Carchi and Lore have combined for a 7-6 record at No. 3 doubles this season. At No. 1 doubles Erik Scharf (Bronxville, N.Y.) and Jake Maxwell (Glen Cove, N.Y.) battled for the 8-6 win. E. Scharf and Maxwell were up 7-4 when the team of Slattery and Cowett made a comeback. BC won two games in row to put the score at 7-6. Finally, E. Scharf and Maxwell managed to take a game for the match win. The second doubles match did not finish once the Red Storm had taken two of the three doubles matches. Though, Brian Scharf (Bronxville, N.Y.) and junior Christian Carere (Brampton, Canada) were playing a great match, giving them the 6-5 lead over Stutz and Anderson. Heading into singles play, St. Johns led 1-0.
At the BIG EAST championship, junior Fabian Carchi showed how talented a player he is. Carchi cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Brad Anderson. In the first meeting between these players, Anderson took a 3-6, 6-7 (5) win over Carchi. Today Carchi got his revenge. The Red Storm were up 2-0 in the match.
The No.1 singles match between senior E. Scharf and Justin Slattery ended quickly. E. Scharf led 1-0 in the first set when Slattery injured himself. Slattery was unable to finish the match, giving E. Scharf the win and the Red Storm another point. This match ended E. Scharfs dual match career at St. Johns. In his four year career, E. Scharf has never lost a match in BIG EAST play.
The Red Storm led 3-0 with four matches still playing. Senior Brian Scharf captured the first set 6-0 at No. 4 singles against Brennan. In the second set, B. Scharf was up 5-2 when Brennan made a comeback. Brennan won three more games and B. Scharf won one to put the score at 6-5 in the second set. B. Scharf was about to play for match point when Brennan argued a call with the umpire. The umpire awarded B. Scharf a point as a penalty against Boston College, therefore giving B. Scharf the match. B. Scharf won the match 6-0, 7-5, ending his Red Storm career with a deciding match win. St. Johns captured the victory, 4-0.
The remaining matches were stopped once the Red Storm sealed the victory. At. No. 5 singles, senior Cameron Lore led the first set 4-3 when Colahan rebounded to win 7-5. Lore was prepared to recover in the second set, leading 2-1 when the match was terminated. In his final match as a Red Storm athlete, Lore was ready to battle just like he did for four years.
At. No. 6 singles, senior Nikhil Teppara (Mississauga, Canada) dropped the first set, 3-6 to Pytko. In the second set, Teppara led 2-1 when the match was stopped. Teppara was not going to go down without a fight in his final match for St. Johns.
The Eagles had a chance for victory at the No. 2 position when St. Johns won the match. Sophomore Jake Maxwell fell 0-6 to Cowett in the first set. Cowett led 3-4 in the second set over Maxwell. Maxwell ended the season with a strong 6-3 record at the second spot.
The Red Storm were one of just six teams to qualify for the championships. In the championships new format, St. Johns finishes behind Notre Dame, Miami, Virginia Tech and Rutgers, who have all been ranked at some point in the season among the top 75 in the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
St. Johns mens tennis ends their season with a 10-7 overall record and 5-3 in the BIG EAST.
