Scharf Falls in Second Round of NCAA Championships

Scharf struggled against Hanlin, who owns the ITA's No. 55 rank. Hanlin, a sophomore, has collected wins over four players ranked in the top 15 this season. In the first set, Scharf was down just 3-2 when Hanlin made his move. Hanlin captured the next three games for the 6-3 win. In the second set, Scharf went down 3-1 and was unable to rebound. Hanlin went on to win the second set, 6-2.
Scharf defeat Romain Ambert of Mississippi State, 6-4, 6-2 on Thursday, for the right to play in the round of 32.
Scharf will graduate from St. John's as the all-time winningest player in school history. In his career, Scharf recorded 120 wins and just 22 losses. Scharf never dropped a match in BIG EAST play during his four year career. From 1997-2001, Scharf played No. 1 singles for the Red Storm, compiling a 60-6 record at that position.
During the 2000-01 season, Scharf compiled a 32-5 record, earning him the No.100 ranking during the week of April 25. Scharf went undefeated in dual match action, notching 16 wins. Scharf has recorded many significant wins this season. At the ITA All-American Championship, Scharf defeated Jason Marshall of Purdue, who was then ranked 17th nationally. Scharf also advanced to the semifinals as the No. 3 seed of the 128-player ITA Eastern Regional Championships.
Scharf also competed at the 2000 NCAA Championships where he fell to the No. 1 seed in the first round.
