With the win the Red Storm improve to 3-0 on the season. Stony Brook fell to 1-2.
Former Long Beach teammate Mischara Saunders (Norwalk, Calif./Long Beach City College) was also a force for the Red Storm, as she hit .364 with 16 kills and two solo blocks. Senior co-captain Kristy Mercein (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) tallied her first double-double of the season with 11 kills and a team-high 16 digs. Sophomore Robyn Kurasaki (Milliani, Hawaii/Maryknoll) assisted on 50 of the Red Storm's 53 kills and also chipped in 10 digs.
Earlier in the day, McCrary again paced the Red Storm to victory with her first career double-double in a three-game sweep of host Buffalo (1-1). The JC transfer, playing in her first tournament for SJU, notched a team-high 12 kills and hit .391 against the Bulls while making 10 digs. McCrary was one of three Red Storm players in double figures offensively as SJU cruised to a 30-22, 30-19, 30-25 win. Saunders and Mercein totaled 10 kills apiece.
Serving was a strength for the Red Storm throughout the tournament, as SJU aced the opposition 33 times, an average of 3.3 per game.
McCrary was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament, and Saunders and Kurasaki also received all-tournament notice.
St. John's returns to action Tuesday, September 4, when the team travels to Brooklyn to take on the Long Island University Blackbirds at 7:00.
