SJU Volleyball Downs Virginia Tech, 3-2

SJU took the first game with confidence, out-hitting the Hokies 14-10. Newcomer Mischara Saunders (Norwalk, Calif./Long Beach City College) made an impressive Big East debut, posting a .258 hitting percentage and tallying seven blocks for the match. Sophomore Rosalyn Dang (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) also contributed to the win, recording 15 kills for the match.
The second and third games proved to be a struggle as the Red Storm lost each by a nine-point margin.
St. Johns rallied in the fourth game, as sophomore setter Robin Kurasaki (Milliani, Hawaii/Maryknoll) passed out 12 assists and Kristy Mercein (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) added a team-high seven digs.
The Red Storm sealed their victory in the fifth game with a stellar performance from its captain, Mercein, who recorded a .600 hitting percentage, and junior Jennifer Emelogu (Austin, Texas/Johnston/Round Rock/LBJ) who posted an game high six digs.
The Red Storm return to action on Sunday taking on Georgetown at 4 p.m. in Alumni Hall.
