Bradleys Goal Lifts St. Johns Past Connecticut, 1-0

St. Johns outshot Connecticut in the first half, 4-3, with a header from sophomore Chris Corcoran (Marshfield, Mass.) and a strike from about 18 yards out by senior midfielder Matia Damiani (Foggia, Italy) the best chances.
In the second half, St. Johns aggressively attacked the west endzone, with a Corcoran header in the in the 45th minute just off the mark. Five minutes later, sophomore Andre Schmid (Sacramento, Calif.) picked up a deflection at the top of the box and sent a shot toward the goal, but the ball was touched on the goalline by a Connecticut defender, resulting in a penalty kick. Senior Rich Bradley (Bayport, N.Y.) toed the line and drilled a shot to the lower far corner, with UConn keeper Adam Schuerman diving the opposite way, giving St. Johns a 1-0 lead at the 50:58 mark. Bradley, who leads the team with four goals and five assists for 13 points, raced toward the student section for what has become a goal-scoring ritual for Red Storm players the Belson Bounce.
The Huskies, however, continued to press on the east goal, with Ralph taking a shot in the 53rd minute that hi the crossbar and a second shot that was deflected. Another shot by Ralph, who took seven of Connecticuts nine shots, was saved by junior keeper Bill Gaudette (Hummelstown, Pa.). The Red Storm had other chances in the half, with a header from Corcoran again off the mark and one from junior Simone Salinno (Lucera, Italy) saved.
St. Johns had eight shots, while the Huskies had eight in the game. The Red Storm took four corner kicks, while the Huskies had three.
The Daly Worldwide Communications Classic concludes on Saturday night, with Connecticut facing Adelphi (4-8-1) at 6 p.m., and the Red Storm meeting Long Island (7-4-1) n the nightcap.
