Wingert Named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year

Wingert was a unanimous first-team selection and was named the leagues Defensive Player of the Year. A junior captain, Wingert earned Defensive Player of the Week honors three times this season after being named the leagues preseason defensive player of the year. A third-team Verizon Academic All-American selection last year, he earned first-team Verizon All-District I honors recently and is currently on the national ballot. The communication arts major has scored three goals and added one assist this season for seven points, and has led a defensive unit that has set a school record with 13 shutouts and owns the nations best goals against average, at 0.31.
The Red Storm had three members of the team earn second team honors, senior midfielder Rich Bradley (Bayport, N.Y.), sophomore forward Chris Corcoran (Marshfield, Mass.) and junior goalkeeper Bill Gaudette (Hummelstown, Pa.). Bradley is second team on the team in scoring with four goals and a team-best six assists for 14 points, and was a first-team Verizon Academic All-District I selection recently. Corcoran has scored a team-high six goals and has three assists for a team-leading 15 points. Gaudette, meanwhile, carries a 12-1-5 record into the BIG EAST semifinals this weekend, with a 0.33 goals against average and 13 shutouts.
Sophomore forward Andre Schmid (Sacramento, Calif.) earned third-team honors. He is third on the team in scoring this season with five goals and two assists for 12 points.
The Red Storm (12-1-5) will meet league rival Connecticut in one of two BIG EAST semifinals matches on Friday at 5 p.m. at Rutgers University. Boston College and Georgetown will meet in the other match. The BIG EAST Championship will be held on Sunday at 1 p.m.
