West Virginia Tops St. John's in BIG EAST Quarterfinals

The Mountaineers had some early chances against the Red Storm in the first half. It was the St. Johns defensive unit, led by junior defender Courtney Rett(Valley Stream, N.Y.) that stepped up against West Virginias aggressive play.
Freshman Kaitlin Schmidt (Centereach, N.Y.) earned the Red Storms only shot on goal. Sophomore Dominica Reina (Frankfort, N.Y.) also notched a shot against the tough West Virginia defense.
At 33:08, West Virginia was awarded a penalty kick after a foul in the box. WVUs Christen Seaman sent the shot wide right, missing the penalty kick.
Sophomore Lauren McGrory (Happuage, N.Y.) sent a blast off a free kick from 25 yards out at 5:30 remaining. WVUs Laura Finley made a strong save to keep the game scoreless.
With less than three minutes remaining in the first half, the Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead. Marisa Kanela sent a cross to Leslie Barden, who headed a shot over Red Storm goalie Tina Foggs reach.
The Mountaineers took a 2-0 lead on a goal by Rachel Kruze with 23:03 remaining in the game. Less than two minutes later, West Virginias Kanela put the Mountaineers ahead 3-0. Lisa Stoia scored WVUs fourth goal on an empty net off a pass from Chrissie Abbott.
Senior goalkeeper Tina Fogg (Warwick, R.I.) made eight saves, making her St. John's all-time career leader in saves with 316.
