Five St. Johns Soccer Players Earn Academic Honors

Jamaica, N.Y.-- Five members of the St. Johns University soccer team were selected to the Verizon Academic All-District I teams, it was announced today. Four student-athletes earned first team honors, and will now be placed on the national ballot, with a chance to earn a spot on the Verizon Academic All-American Teams. Three members of the Red Storms nationall-recognized mens soccer program earned first team honors, led by junior defender Chris Wingert, (Babylon, N.Y.) who has earned a 3.83 grade-point average in communication arts. One of the teams captains, he has helped St. Johns record 12 shutouts, while he has scored three goals and assisted on another. This is the second consecutive year that Wingert has been named to the first team All-District I. Last season he also was named to the Verizon Academic All-American 3rd team. He was selected today as a finalist for the Hermann Trophy, honoring the top college mens soccer player in the country. The other mens honorees were senior midfielder Rich Bradley, (Bayport, N.Y.) and senior defender Patrick Lonergan (Millington, N.J.). Bradley, who carries a 3.44 grade-point average in graphic arts, leads the team in scoring with four goals and five assists for a total of 13 points. Lonergan, who has a 3.63 grade-point average in sports management, has helped to anchor a defensive unit that has limited opponents to six goals all season, and leads the nation with a 0.33 goals against average. On the womens side, sophomore forward Dominica Reina (Frankfort, N.Y.) earned first team honors. Reina, who has not declared a major, earned a 3.65 grade-point average. She has been dominant for the Red Storm this season, scoring a team-leading 11 goals and three assists for a total of 25 points. The finally member is senior defender Jen Taylor, (South Hempstead, N.Y.) who earned second-team honors. The teams lone captain helped guide the squad to a 9-6-4 record and four shutouts. She has recorded three assists this season. Taylor has earned a 3.21 grade-point average in elementary education.
