Mike Weinberg Memorial Day will honor the former SJU outfielder and New York City fireman, who was killed in the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center on September 11.
He played at St. Johns from 1986-89, helping lead the team to the 1988 BIG EAST Conference Tournament Championship and to the NCAA Tournament. In the 1988 league tournament, he was named the Most Outstanding Player after hitting two home runs, including the game-winner against Villanova in the semifinal game.
Weinberg was a career .256 hitter, with six home runs and 59 RBI in four seasons at St. Johns. Weinberg graduated from St. Johns in 1990 with a bachelor of science in management from the College of Business Administration. Following his graduation, Weinberg was drafted by the Detroit Tigers and played two years in their minor league system.
A native of Maspeth, N.Y., he was a member of the New York Fire Department, stationed at Engine 1, Ladder 24 in lower Manhattan.
The ceremony will begin at 11:30 a.m. Members of Weinbergs House and several of his former teammates will be on hand. In addition, St. Johns Head Coach Ed Blankmeyer will make a presentation to the Weinberg family.
In lieu of admission charges, fans attending will be asked to make a donation to the St. Johns University September 11 Victims Fund. All proceeds from the game will go toward the fund, which provides scholarships for the children and spouses of the victims of the 2001 tragedy.
Members of the media planning to attend the event should contact St. Johns Assistant Director of Media Relations Mike Mex Carey at 718-990-1521.
