St. Johns Baseball to Host Summer Camps
6/19/2002 12:00:00 AM | Baseball
The first of two week-long camps will run from July 8 to July 12, with the second camp running from July 15 to July 19. The camps run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.
Children ages 7 to 14, or up until the completion of eighth grade, are eligible to participate in the camp, which focuses on all areas of the game (offense, defense, pitching, catching, basic throwing, fielding and base running). The purpose of the camp is to improve on baseball skills and to help individuals better understand how the game is played through controlled game situations, competition games, individual skill work and team fundamentals.
Each morning, the program will begin with stretching before going over fundamentals of the game. Following lunch, the afternoon session will focus on controlled game situations.
Tuition is $250 for each weekly session, and $425 for both weeks. There is a $15 discount for all St. Johns employees and Bullpen Club members. Checks should be made payable to Ed Blankmeyer.
Blankmeyer recently completed his seventh season as the head coach at St. Johns, guiding the Red Storm to a 29-23 overall record and a 13-13 mark in the BIG EAST. He spent 15 years as an assistant coach at Seton Hall before coming to SJU. During his coaching career, more than 75 players have signed professional contracts, including players such as Mo Vaughn, Matt Morris, Craig Biggio and John Valentin.
He will be assisted at the camp by members of his staff, assistant coach Mike Hampton, a former All-American at Clemson; pitching coach Chris Jones; and graduate assistant coach Mike Fahid.
