Boston College, ranked 18th nationally, jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 1:05 into the game when Schmidt booted a crossing pass that deflected off a Red Storm defender and past junior goalkeeper Bill Gaudette (Hummelstown, Pa.).
The Eagles added a second goal early in the second half when Guy Melameds direct kick from the 18-yard line hit the inside of the post at the 48:30 mark, increasing the margin to 2-0.
The Red Storm cut the margin in half six minutes later, at the 54:30 mark, when junior Angel Rodriguez (Toms River, N.J.) pounded a direct kick from just outside the box and past BC keeper Kyle Singer.
St. Johns continued to press in the second half, but could not connect as the Red Storms 14-game win streak against the Eagles came to an end.
The Red Storm return home next weekend, hosting Indiana, Florida International and William & Mary in the St. Johns Classic on September 6 and 7. The tournament will be held at the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point.
