St. Johns Downs Fordham, 5-1

Jamaica, N.Y. Sophomore Dominica Reina (Frankfort, N.Y.) recorded her first career hat trick to lead the St. Johns womens soccer team (1-0) to a 5-1 victory over Fordham University (0-3) this evening at DaSilva Memorial Field. Reinas three goals sealed the win for senior goalkeeper Tina Fogg (Warwick, R.I.), who earned her 23rd career victory. With the win, Fogg surpasses Sherry Reill to become the all-time winningest goalie in St. Johns history.

Fordham gained the lead early on a goal by Caitlin Gansfuss at 3:47. But, junior Claudia Rubino (Montreal North, Canada) would knot the game at one-all with some help from Reina at 8:15.

Freshman Kaitlin Schmidt (Centereach, N.Y.) scored her first collegiate goal at 21:35 to put the Red Storm ahead. On a throw-in from sophomore Lauren McGrory (Hauppauge, N.Y.) and a pass from sophomore Pristina Alford (Tacoma, Wa.), Schmidt used a header to put one past the Fordham goalie. Schmidts goal would prove to be the gamewinner.

Senior Jen Taylor (South Hempstead, N.Y.) and Alford assisted on Reinas first goal, a blast from the right side at 26:42. Freshman Erin Henderson (Watervliet, N.Y.) recorded her first collegiate point with an assist on Reinas goal at 60:46. At 71:52, senior Joanna Dawson (Staten Island, N.Y.) got Reina the ball down the middle for another goal.

Fogg (1-0) made five saves and allowed one goal in her record-setting win. For Fordham, Shannon Misiaszek (0-3) had six saves while allowing five goals.

The Red Storm return to action this weekend at the Miami (Ohio) Tournament in Oxford, Ohio. St. Johns will take on host Miami on Friday before battling Evansville on Sunday.
