Head coach John Skudin has gained a reputation for fielding quality swim teams at St. John's. He earned BIG EAST Coach of the Year honors in 2000 as the swimming program reached its height of success in 2000 with a second place finish at the BIG EAST Championships. The program began competitively in 1973. The rest of the programs highlights are chronicled below:
- Jaak Savvi (men) earns Academic All-American honors in 2002
- During the 1999-2000 season the men's team placed fifth (best ever) at the Big East Championships
- In the last 10 years 52 school records have been broken: Women's team has been named to NCAA Academic All American Team for eight consecutive years; the men's team has been named to NCAA Academic All American Team four straight years
- In 1992-1993 the team won two National Catholic Championship Titles (relay and individual)
- During the 1996-1997 season there were four Senior National Times; Best combined record (Men 9-3, Women 10-3)
- During the 1997-1998 season there were five Senior National Times; broke 11 school records; Men placed seventh and the women placed eighth at the Big East Championships
- Head coach John Skudin was named 2000 BIG EAST Men's Coach of the Year
