BUFFALO, N.Y. - Fueled by 13 second half points from freshman Angie Clark (Copaigue, N.Y.) the Red Storm outran the Buffalo Bulls this evening at Alumni Arena in Buffalo, winning 57-47. St. John's improves to 4-3 overall, while the Bulls fall to 1-4.
After a closely played first half, the Red Storm took control of the game early in the second period and never looked back, winning their fourth game of the season.
After winning the opening tip, Buffalo opened up scoring on their first possession and quickly pulled out to a five point lead with a three on the next play. The Bulls led by six with just under eight to go in the first when Kim MacMillan (Toms River, N.J.) hit a three and Kati Kurtosi (Miskolc, Hungary) followed it with a lay-up to cut the lead to one. Three minutes later, a bucket by Clark tied the game at 22. MacMillan's three with 11 seconds remaining gave St. John's their first lead of the game, but it did not last as Brook Meunier knocked in a jumper as time expired to put Buffalo up 26-25 at the break.
St. John's opened the second half on a 12-6 run to take a 37-31 lead with 14:18 remaining. The Bulls chipped away at the lead with baskets by Meunier and Calderone and two free throws by Jessica Kochendorfer, tying the game at 37 with 10 minutes remaining.
Four straight points from Clark kicked off an 11-1 run by St. John's, who took their largest lead (11) when Shemika Stevens (New York, N.Y.) hit a three with 4:32 remaining. Buffalo pulled within six when Allison Bennett sank a three pointer, but a fast break lay-up by Clark with 33 seconds remaining sealed the win for St. John's.
Secrett Stubblefield (Fairfax, Va.) led all scorers with 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Clark finished with 17 and a career-high 14 rebounds, while MacMillan chipped in 12 points.
St. John's returns to Alumni Hall for a game against St. Peter's on Sunday, December 14.
