Red Storm Fall 63-61 to St. Peter's

JAMAICA, N.Y. - After a back-and-forth battle in which the lead changed 14 times, it was St. Peter's who would prevail with a 63-61 win over St. John's this afternoon at Alumni Hall. St. John's falls to 4-4 on the season.
St. Peter's rebounded from a 26-21 halftime deficit, led by 15 second-half points from Lindsay Gonzalez, to take the game and improve to 4-3 on the season.
The Red Storm used an 8-0 run to take a 26-21 halftime lead, after a tightly played first period. With St. John's leading 9-4 with 15 minutes to play in the first, St. Peter's scored seven unanswered points over the next two minutes to take a 11-9 lead. Secrett Stubblefield (Fairfax, Va.) squashed the run with a three-point basket, but a St. Peter's basket forced a 13-13 tie, the third of the half. The Peahens took their largest lead of the half, a 21-18 advantage, with 5:21 remaining, but St. John's bounced back as a jump shot by Kati Kurtosi (Miskolc, Hungary) kicked off an 8-0 run over the final 4:28 of the first half.
The Red Storm increased their lead to six early in the second, but seven-straight points by St. Peter's gave the Peahens their first lead in ten minutes. After the two teams exchanged baskets, the Red Storm pulled ahead by five on a three-point play by freshman Angie Clark (Copaigue, N.Y.) with 13:38 to play. St. Peter's would not trail for long, as Gonzalez's eight points led the Peahens on their 13-2 run over the next six minutes, as they took their largest lead of the game, a six point advantage.
St. John's chipped away at the lead with a three from Kim MacMillan (Toms River, N.J.) and another basket from Clark, but the Peahens remained ahead, holding onto a 56-51 lead with just over three minutes remaining. Stubblefield cut the lead to two with a three-pointer on St. John's next possession, before the Peahens scored four straight for a 60-54 lead with under one minute to play.
Gonzalez connected on one of two from the foul line with 26 seconds left giving St. Peter's a 61-57 lead. Reka Szavuly (Miskolc, Hungary) sank two from the foul line for the Red Storm, pulling them within two with eight seconds left. The Peahens connected on two free throws down the floor to go up by four with six seconds remaining to seal the win for St. Peter's.
Szavuly hit a lay-up as time expired, making the final score 63-61. MacMillan finished with 20 points, shooting 7-of-16 from the floor and 5-of-10 from the three-point line. Clark notched her second double-double of the week, tying her career-high (set on Wednesday vs. Buffalo) of 14 rebounds and added 14 points. Stubblefield had 14 points and dished out a game-high six assists for St. John's. Gonzalez finished with 20 points and Tyonna Vance added 18 for the Peahens.
The Red Storm are back in action on Saturday, December 20 at Ohio State.
