Softball Beats San Diego; Loses To Loyola Marymount in Doubleheader

In the bottom of the second inning against San Diego, a sacrifice fly by freshman Linda Reyes (Garden Grove, Calif.) scored classmate Megan Oliver (Endicott, N.Y.) from third for the Red Storms first run. St. Johns tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the third when senior Jessica Shepherd (Akron, Ohio) scored from first on sophomore Allina Sainzs (San Diego, Calif.) RBI triple to secure the win. Shepherd and freshman Jo Sherlock (San Diego, Calif.) each had two hits in the game for St. Johns. Senior Courtney Fitzgerald (Bellerose, N.Y.) went seven innings for the Red Storm, giving up no runs, on four hits and with six strikeouts.
In the second game against Loyola Marymount, the Lions scored two runs in the first inning, one in the third and two more in the sixth to top the Red Storm 6-0. Shepherd had another stellar game at the plate going 2 for 2 for St. Johns. Freshman Melanie Lehman (Placerville, Calif.) took the loss for St. Johns going 2 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on four hits.
The St. Johns softball team returns to action on Tuesday, March 4, when they travel to San Diego State for a single game starting at 3:00.
