Swimming Sweeps Stony Brook

Jamaica N.Y.- In their final home meet ever at Alumni Hall, the St. John's Men's and Women's Swimming team improved to 4-0 on both sides against Stony Brook University today, in front of an overwhelming crowd of friends, family and alumni. On this emotional day, the Red Storm shined through, sweeping the Sea Wolves, winning 19 out of 22 total events, and recording scores of 126-66 on the women's side and 111-88 on the men's side.
Today marked the end of an era, as the St. John's Swimming programs will end after 39 years of existence after the conclusion of the 2003-04 season. Usually the last home game of the season would honor the senior class, but today was different. It was a day for all the athletes, as Head Coach John Skudin explains: "It's a year where everyone is a senior and it's everyone's last year, no matter what."
Individually, senior Beth Malinowski (Singerlande, N.Y.) went three for three, winning the 1000 free (10:40.39), 200 free (2:16.59) and 500 free (5:12.04). Laura Nuudi (Tallin, Estonia) won the 200 Backstroke (2:07.20) and was a member of the first place 400-medley relay team that included Anette Melissa Hoye (Elverum, Norway), Gosia Rodzik (Wroclaw, Poland) and Caitlin Ranney (Queensbury, N.Y.). Ranney also finished first in the 50 free with a time of 24.69. Junior Christine Myers (Wantagh, N.Y.) showed an outstanding performance finishing first in the 400 IM with at time of 4:24.50.
On the men's side, sophomore Pawel Sokolowski (Szczecin, Poland) was a threat once again, winning the 50 free at 20.74 and the 100 free at 44.67. In addition, senior Michal Szapiel (Ponznan, Poland) and sophomore Yuriy Bugayev (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each won two events to contribute to the domination by the Red Storm. Szapiel won the 500 free with and time of 5:02.42 and the 1000 free at 9:40.03. Bugayev easily won the 400 IM with a time of 4:13.86 and the 200 backstroke at 1:57.14.
The Red Storm returns to action on January 30, 2004 when they will travel to Villanova, Pa. to take on Villanova University.
