Skudin Wins His 100th

Villanova, Pa.- In his final season and 14th year as Head Coach of the St. John's Men's and Women's swimming teams, John Skudin won his 100th victory today as men's swimming demolished Villanova 132-72 at the Villanova Swim Complex tonight. The women's team showed a standout performance, but it was not enough as the Red Storm fell to the Wildcats, 77-125.
For the men three members of the team, senior Michal Szapiel (Ponznan, Poland) and sophomore's Pawel Sokolowski (Szczecin, Poland) and Yuriy Bugayev (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won two events each for the Red Storm. Szapiel won the 1000 free and 200 free (9:51.15, 1:40.53), Sokolowski the 50 free and 100 free (21.35, 46.95) and Bugayev the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke (1:59.00, 58.63). Junior's Marcin Filipowicz (Bialystok, Poland) and Wojciech Sikora (Gdynia, Poland) also showed strong performances, winning the 500 free and 100 butterfly events. Overall, the men's team showed a dominating performance winning 10 out of 11 events for the meet.
On the women's side, freshman Anette Melissa Hoye (Elverum, Norway) turned in an outstanding performance, winning the 100 breaststroke at1:08.21 for the Red Storm. St. John's also took home first place in both the 200 freestyle relay and 200-medley relay.
The Red Storm returns to action on February 14, 2004 at the Rutgers Invitational in Piscataway, N.J.
