Queens, NY - The Red Storm dropped their third-straight match this evening, losing 2-0 to Connecticut at Belson Stadium. St. John's falls to 6-4-1 overall and 0-4 in the BIG EAST, while the Huskies improve to 6-5 on the season.
The Red Storm attacked first but could not connect on several early attempts. With 34 minutes remaining in the first half, Pristina Alford (Tacoma, WA) served the ball from beyond the midfield line to Natasha Lee (Albuquerque, NM), who was breaking in the center of the field. Lee caught up with the pass but collided with the Connecticut keeper on a header attempt before the Husky defense cleared the ball. Several minutes later three Connecticut defenders foiled another break by Lee.
Connecticut first threatened in the 29th minute, but Kristi Lefebvre's shot was blocked by Holly Ryder (Plantation, FL) and cleared outside of the penalty area by the Red Storm defense. The Huskies connected on their next attempt when Kathleen Frank's chip shot from eight yards out inched in under the crossbar and over the hands of St. John's keeper Tracey Rollings (Paignton, England).
St. John's began the second half in similar fashion to the first. On the kickoff play, the Red Storm launched a pass up the field to Lee, who was once again breaking down the middle of the field. That play would develop several times over the second half, as Ryder, Krystle Jalalian (Burien, WA) and Erinn Flaherty (Clifton Park, NY) each served the ball over the Husky defense in efforts to set up Lee.
Jalalian had another equalizing attempt with 17 minutes remaining, but her shot from the end line was pushed out of bounds by the Connecticut keeper. Laura Burlacu's (Flushing, NY) header off of Flaherty's corner kick on the next play sailed wide.
The Huskies put the game out of reach late in the second half as Karyn Riviere's tally gave Connecticut a 2-0 lead at the 87:06 mark. Lauren Lattanzio took advantage of a defensive miscue by the Red Storm defense, stole the ball and fed it to Riviere. Riviere's shot went to the lower right corner of the net.
St. John's will return to BIG EAST action on Sunday when Villanova visits Belson Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 1 pm.
